Showcasing the Real-World Impact of Digital Public Goods

The OpenG2P team has returned from an energising and fruitful trip to this year’s ID4Africa, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – a venue that holds special significance for us at OpenG2P. We are currently actively working with three government departments in the country to build scalable, inclusive, and efficient benefit delivery systems, making our participation in ID4Africa especially meaningful this year.

As part of the session on “Digital Public Goods in Use,” Puneet Joshi, CTO, OpenG2P, shared real-world success stories demonstrating the tangible impact of Digital Public Goods (DPGs). Puneet’s presentation focused on the applications of OpenG2P in Ethiopia, spotlighting our integration with Fayda ID and collaborations with key government departments such as:

  • Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) on the Emergency Relief Programme.

  • Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA) on the Urban Destitute Programme.

  • Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI) on the Farmer Registry.

Puneet also underscored OpenG2P’s modular, DPI-aligned architecture, enabling seamless integration into existing national service delivery systems.

In the same session, Dr. Girum Ketema, Director of the Digital Agriculture and Finance Program at the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), shed light on the functionality and impact of OpenG2P’s Farmer Registry. The registry is designed to address systemic challenges in the agricultural sector and enhance service delivery. The initiative aims to register 500,000 farmers in its initial rollout this year, with a long-term vision to scale and reach up to 15 million farmers nationwide. This database will also be integrated with the rural land administration system, which holds digitised information on 30 million land parcels.

We were also excited to engage with representatives from several African countries on exploring how DPGs can streamline and digitise their own G2P initiatives.

“The use of digital identification was a central theme of the conference, and G2P naturally emerged as a significant use case for such IDs. There was considerable interest in our work on the Farmer Registry for ATI, Ethiopia, which is integrated with the Fayda ID system.”

Puneet Joshi

CTO, OpenG2P

As always, it was a pleasure to participate in one of the most impactful global gatherings advancing Digital Identity and Digital Public Infrastructure in Africa. The event served as a great way to highlight ways in which DPGs can foster inclusive, efficient, and sustainable development globally, and to touch base with other technology developers, policy makers, and country representatives, working tirelessly every day towards a cutting-edge digital future.

We look forward to continuing to participate in ID4Africa every year, and other similar events in the realm of DPI that offer spaces for learning, collaboration, exchange, and collective growth.
